Book 0 · The Functional Theory of Systems
A systematic theory of the functional perception of reality
The functional method does not describe reality. It reveals the functional order of reality.
The sciences have divided reality into fields, each with its own language and method. The Functional Theory of Systems does not ask what something is, but what function it has in carrying out a Task. This change of starting point does not change reality. It changes the way we look at it.
An example from the Guide
The same coffee can be made in a Turkish coffee pot, an espresso machine or a filter, or as an instant drink. The forms differ, the Task is the same. Water, coffee, a heat source, a vessel and a person stop being objects and become bearers of functions. You will recognize the same pattern in a school lesson, a production process and a surgical operation.
The Task determines the Shell, the Mould perceives the Shell, the Algorithm applies the Mould, the Algorithm reveals the Pattern, and the Pattern expands functional knowledge.
Books · Foundation
Book 1 · FTM
A systematic theory of the function, action and essence of man
What is the function of man? I have the function of solving Tasks.
The Book shows where Tasks come from, why different people naturally approach the same Task in different ways, and what it takes for difference to become synergy instead of conflict.
The limited Subject recognizes the Good through Values; from the Good, for the sake of Essence, defines the Task; through the Task gathers Resources; through Resources builds a System; through the System acts; and through action takes on Responsibility.

Book 2 · Normative register
89 terms in six blocks, with block codes
A Book explains a term, the Glossary defines it.
As long as there is only one book, it is enough to define terms along the way. As soon as there are more, a question arises: does Task in the third book mean the same as in the first? The Unified Glossary exists so that the answer does not depend on memory. Every entry has a definition, a status, a source and links.

Book 3 · Workbook of the FTS series
100 puzzles in 10 trainings, with an entry and exit test and the Profile of Functional Thinking
Your own answer first, and only then the rest of the page.
The Gym does not explain the theory. It develops the ability to see, in a real situation, what is functionally important: what we know, what the Subject needs, what the Task is, what the System has, what limits it and where its Boundary lies.
Puzzle 1
An Advisor is talking with a PotKli (potential client). Over the last five minutes the PotKli has looked at his watch twice, given short answers, crossed his arms and asked no questions. After the Conversation the Advisor says: “He’s not interested in this.” What do we actually know here, and what have we added with our own Interpretation?
The Facts are the watch, the short answers, the crossed arms and the silence. Loss of interest is a Hypothesis, not a Fact. A Fact is what we know. An Interpretation is what we think it means.

Book 4 · Workbook of the FTS series
The Theory of Systems learned by solving Tasks · 50 Trainings in 7 Cycles
Don’t rush to solve it. First hear what the System is telling you.
Here the order is reversed: first you get a Task, a Puzzle or a real situation, you try on your own, and only then do you get a name for what you have experienced. Before the question “What should I do?” the Gym introduces one more step: “What is actually happening here?”
Training 1 · Imbalance
In front of you are three identical containers holding 9, 3 and 6 marbles. We want each of them to hold the same number. Before you move anything, answer: what is actually happening here?
All 18 marbles already exist. The problem is not that they are missing, but how they are distributed: that is Imbalance. Don’t start from the solution. Start by perceiving the state.

Book 5 · The Functional Theory of Systems
The Functional Foundations of Advising · the theoretical part in eight units
The Advisor does not manage the Subject’s Decision. He helps the Subject understand what he is deciding about.
Functional Advising starts from the Subject, his Limitation and his Need, not from a solution chosen in advance. When the Subject cannot or does not want to solve the Task on his own, he borrows another’s I: the Advisor. The Task and the Decision remain the Subject’s.
Five sentences about retirement · the NAL scale
There is no sixth level. The Subject’s Decision is the exit from the scale.
Second group
The operational Resources of Advising. The Books define the terms, the Handbooks show how they are used in a Conversation. They are arranged in learning order: the way an Advisor comes to know the Interlocutor, from the questions the Interlocutor arrives with to the proper close of the Conversation.

Unified Glossary · Book 2
89 terms in six blocks. Every code is permanent, and every link leads to an existing code. Where a Book and the Glossary differ, the Glossary prevails.
The common foundation of FTM and FTS.
Subject, Task, System, Res, Resource, Function, orientations and types.
Structure, Sequence, Trigger, Parameter, Property, Change, Measuring Point.
Management, Decision-making, Trust, Cooperation, Conflict.
Shell, Mould, Algorithm, Pattern, principles and regularities.
Essence, Values, the Good, Freedom, Community.
K-0xxThe natural state of every Subject and the source of Need. The only primitive term of the theory.
K-0xxA state of the Res that does not ensure functional balance. The same phenomenon as Limitation, seen from the side of the System.
K-0xxThe manifestation of the Subject’s Limitation. It exists objectively, whether or not the Subject is aware of it.
K-0xxThe process by which a Need enters the Subject’s awareness and becomes definable.
K-0xxThe function of solving a Task. When the I is borrowed, the Task and the Decision remain the Subject’s.
K-0xxThe state in which the Task has been carried out in accordance with the Criterion of implementation.
K-0xxThe state of reality created by the appearance of the Solution, from which a new Limitation arises.
K-008The scale of Need awareness: five levels, from NAL 0 to NAL 4. The Subject’s Decision is the exit from the scale.
Draft: the exact K-0xx codes are filled in from the Glossary. Later each entry can have its own address, so that the Books and Handbooks can link to it directly.

Dragoslav Jojić is a consultant and strategist with many years of experience in team building, organizational development and business consulting.
The research began in the 1990s in the IOK Team, formed at GP Rad with the task of finding a meta model of a System with the smallest possible number of parameters. The result was software for describing Systems on a non-redundant principle: a piece of data enters the System in one place and is distributed to wherever it is intended. FTM and the FTS cycle grew out of this functional view of the world.
